Responsibility falls in the hands of ______? [Nov. 19th, 2006|08:51 pm]
In class, the "jury" decided that the fault of the monster's actions fell in his own hands. One must stop and truly think about the whole picture. Although the monster had a horrible beginning to his "life," this does not mean that he should roam the world feeling angry and killing everyone. At the same time, Victor abandoned him which left him to figure out the world without any guidance whatsoever. This left the monster to figure out the ways in which he was to interact with society. Since society didn't accept him, it led to him doing thing that he might not have done otherwise. In my opinion, the fault lies in everyone who interacted with him.

Poets [Nov. 6th, 2006|10:47 pm]
All the poets seem to believe that poetry is necessary for life or that it's "what we stay alive for." I simply cannot buy into this line of thinking. I will agree that some poetry can reflect out inner feelings about the world, or maybe that someone else has felt the same way you do. At the same time, it is definitely not NECESSARY. There is a great amount of poetry that the general population has never read and will never even want to read but this doesn't infer that they will not have a fulfilling life or that their lives will be any worse off.

After reading all the different comments, it seems that I am the only one that feels the way I do. I guess that's why I'm at TECH.

Don Juan [Oct. 29th, 2006|10:10 pm]
So.. i'm not sure how to approach this week's blog. I've read most of Byron's Don Juan and all I can really say is that it is interesting. Byron truly did make me "giggle."

WUI - Writing Under the Influence [Oct. 22nd, 2006|09:46 pm]
It goes without saying that great writing came from authors that were not in their normal state of mind. I'm not exactly sure how I feel about this though. Isn't it sort of cheap to use a substance to alter the way one's mind works in order to achieve greater things? If one can not think of something on their own, then they probably should not have thought of it in the first place.
On the other hand, AMAZING things have come from the use of mind altering substances. For example, if what was in the movie is correct, Coleridge had writer's block, took some opium, and was able to compose great poetry. Without this aid, there would have not been anything written. If one goes by the first view point in this post, we would be without the great works of Coleridge. The question is, does making great work condone the use of drugs?

The Rime of the Ancient Mariner [Oct. 20th, 2006|01:37 am]
I believe that this poem has more to do with the consequences of doing something wrong. Perhaps Coleridge was trying to portray the fact that everything we do has consequences; especially those things that are done wrongly for absolutely no reason. An example is that all the other mariner's end up dying in the end, whereas the "Ancient Mariner" stays alive. Perhaps this is so that he has to live longer to suffer for his wrong-doing or maybe it is that he has to remain alive for the rest of eternity paying for his sin. Either way, I think that Coleridge is trying to teach his readers the lesson that one should always do what is moral. Well I just threw in "moral" but that is a topic for another day...

Sublime? [Oct. 15th, 2006|08:06 pm]
It seems that this week's focus has been on the sublime. I believe that all of us has, at some point, experienced something so sublime that it was breath-taking. One of those experiences for me was during a hike up a mountain in New Mexico. The higher I climbed, the more aware I was of how high I was and the repercussions of falling. When I finally reached the summit, I was awestricken and could just look at what was before me. It was AMAZING.

The trouble is finding this sort of thing in everyday life. We all walk around minding our own business, just doing enough to get through the day. When we do this, we miss out on the simple things of life such as the birds singing in the trees, or perhaps the sole flower growing in the "ruff." Since our nature is to want to quickly finish the tasks at hand, we don't take the time to enjoy the great things that happen around us every minuite of every day.

Pride and Prejudice [Oct. 1st, 2006|11:04 pm]
Pride and Prejudice has, in my eyes, proved itself as a classic. The story including engaging stories and suspenseful drama kept me interested throughout most of the book; a feat not accomplished by most books. The situations that interested me the most were the parts with Elizabeth and Darcy's "courting." It sort of reminded me of real life because people always judge before they actually know anything about someone. It's natural. Elizabeth's understandable dislike of Darcy in the beginning of the book paralleled this completely because of what he said about her. Then once she finally found out how great a person he really was, she began to love him. It just shows that human emotions are fickle.

Pride or Prejudice [Sep. 24th, 2006|10:10 pm]
Which is worse? Reading through Austen's "Pride and Prejudice" it seems as if she is trying to assert that Pride is worse. From the beginning of the novel, Mr. Darcy's pride stops him from wanting to pursue a relationship with Elizabeth. It is true that this spawns a bit of dislike towards Darcy on the part of Elizabeth, but this causes other problems. One of these problems is that Darcy is percieved as less tactful and less personable. Elizabeth's dislike of Darcy is what makes the decision for her to decline his proposal of marriage. His original pride caused prejudice which then led to an undesireable outcome for Darcy.

Oops! [Sep. 18th, 2006|02:09 am]
As they say, "Better late than never."

Well on this wonderful Sunday night I've been a bit distracted by a number of things, so my post will be somewhat brief. My entries in this "journal" thus far have been to the effect of "I don't enjoy what I am reading." Guess what? It really hasn't changed. I'm not sure what the reasoning for this is, maybe it's just that I'm not into this era of writing, maybe I'm not giving it a chance. I really don't know. I do know that I am glad to be on to something new. A novel. In my opinion, novels are more appealing because they involve you in the story, making you want to know more. This is different from what we've been reading because in poems and what not, you have to analyze every single line. I don't like putting that much thought into reading. Reading should be fun and make you think a bit. It is my opinion that the works lose their appeal when you spend 20 minutes examining why an author chose the exact words they did, or why they wrote it in a certain rhyming scheme. Again, this is just my opinion.

Feminism [Sep. 10th, 2006|11:57 pm]
I'm not entirely sure what to be posting about this week as the subject has been almost solely on feminism. My views on the subject are that without these views, women would not have achieved all that they have achieved thus far but at the same time, bashing men isn't the way to go. Yes men have oppressed women since the beginning of time, but this shouldn't make it right to then TRY and bash the men. Just getting women's lawful rights should be enough.

Proverbs [Sep. 3rd, 2006|11:21 pm]
The Proverbs of Hell. In my opinion, this is not a very accurate name. Sure, there are lots of them that, perhaps, would be against the popular religious beliefs but all in all they have meanings that would be useful in everyday life. For example, "The eagle never lost so much time. as when he submitted to learn of the crow." As discussed in class, this is suggesting that inorder to learn, one must seek help from someone who is experienced in what you are trying to do, not someone that means well but has no idea what they are talking about. It can also mean that one needs to find out how to do something themself instead of relying on others.
